Dr. William James, Director
Dr. James is a psychologist and has been at South Shore Counseling for over 20 years. He received his doctorate from Hofstra University and has focused his clinical practice on working with children, adolescents, adults and families. Initially trained in Behavior Managment, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Therapy (RET), Dr. James has, over the years been trained in numerous other approaches including Family Systems, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Affective-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ACBT). Dr. James teaches mindfulness across all therapeutic approaches and through self awareness we can then become self determined. He believes that each client requires their own treatment plan and treatment approach, necessitating an eclectic blending of what he has learned over the years. He has extensive experience with Obsessive Compulsive Disorders, Borderline Personality Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Trauma.
Max is a graduate of Columbia University, earning his dual Masters’ degrees (Ed.M. and MA) in Counseling Psychology. He enjoys working with, and specializes in, his work with young adults, adolescents, children, and families through a wide range of presenting issues. His clinical work encompasses relational, psychodynamic, family systems, cognitive behavioral, multicultural and mindfully based modalities. As such, he believes the relationship and the rapport created between patient and therapist is crucial for successful outcomes, self-compassion, the fostering of insight, and, ultimately, improved quality of life. He has been fortunate to work in a variety of clinical settings, including: Stony Brook University’s Student Counseling Center (CAPS), The Children’s Home of Poughkeepsie, Columbia University’s Dean Hope Center, and SUNY New Paltz’s student-run crisis hotline and walk-in center, Oasis/Haven. Much of his love for working with children and adolescents come from his experiences at the Mid-Island Summer Camp, where he continues to work in a directoral role. He looks forward to continuing his full-time practice with South Shore’s team in the Amityville office!
Justine holds two Masters Degrees: one in Creative Arts Therapy, and one in Counseling with an Advanced Certificate in Mental Health Counseling from C.W. Post LIU. Justine has worked in the mental health field with a variety of ages and populations since 1999. Justine’s diverse clinical experience includes Individual, Groups and Families. Justine has both a clinical and creative eclectic approach to therapy; which she caters to each clients needs.
Amy is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Addiction Specialist with 10 years of experience working with culturally diverse populations. She is a NY State OASAS Approved Provider for DWI/DUI assessments, and assists individuals and families in dealing with substance abuse. Amy also works with spouses dealing with co-dependency issues and those parents and children going through divorce. She provides individual, marriage and family counseling, as well as parent education. She has extensive experience dealing with at risk youth, as well as behavioral and emotional challenges in children and adolescents.
Ronnie is a licensed clinical social worker who has been working in the field for over 20 years. She has extensive experience working with adolescents and adults suffering from a wide range of emotional issues including depression and anxiety. She is an extremely caring and empathetic individual who utilizes an eclectic approach to meet her patients needs. Ronnie is currently practicing at South Shore Counseling on a part time basis.
Marcella has earned her Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Touro College. As part of her training as a Mental Health Counselor, Marcella has provided therapeutic interventions, developed treatment plans, and run Psycho-Education groups for adults and children. Her approach to therapy is multifaceted and tailored to satisfy the needs of her clients. Marcella is also a New York State licensed English Teacher, with extensive experience in working with adolescents and children with ADD/ADHD at various academic levels. Her techniques are focused around gaining the tools necessary to enhance self-reflection, developing coping skills, and minimizing symptoms. With her clinical experience and teaching skills, she can address the needs of those whom she is working, with diversified insight, and compassion.
